The âBig Night Inâ Trend
Finder reported that Halloween spending for 2023 is projected to be 38% higher than their original estimate of ÂŁ777 million based on past spending in previous years. The cause of this increase in spending could be due to the fact that consumers are becoming more intentional with spending money on food products and creating experiences in the home, driving the âBig Night Inâ trend, instead of going out to outside events, bars or restaurants.
The âBig Night Inâ is no longer a crisps and dip affair. Mealtimes have grown in importance and this is an overall consequence of the rising cost of living. Consumers have realised that they can save more money in the long run by avoiding expensive eating out costs.
The âfakeawayâ trend came into fruition last year and it shows no sign of slowing down. Consumers now favour recreating eat-out favourites at home instead of going out to their usual favourite diners. Because of this, retailers have had to bear this in mind when considering stock, and ensure they have products to accommodate the trend over these festive periods. This is why weâve seen the recent rise in Halloween themed food and frozen products that have launched this month.
Adding to this, it appears that consumers are also being more intentional about the way that they are celebrating Halloween. Overtime, it seems that Halloween has become much more of an âeventâ similar to the way it is celebrated in The United States.
Weâve seen this with the rise of the autumnal dĂ©cor trend, with many retailers now offering Halloween home items such as duvet covers, pictures and decorations. This Halloween period, George at Asda debuted their range of Halloween duvet sets which went viral on Tik-Tok, with several of the designs recently selling out.
The Impact of HFSS
With the HFSS legislation that came into place in October 2022, Reapp revealed that there was an overall drop in confectionery sales last October, despite peak of sales for Halloween. Since the introduction of the legislation, brands were faced with a new challenge to maintain sales of their products.
Because of this, brands have now shown skill in adapting to the legislation and have found innovative ways to promote themselves and retain customer loyalty. With the introduction of new Halloween themed products this year, itâs predicted that brands can expect a similar increase, potentially reaching higher sales around the Halloween period.
